New texting law goes into effect today

7/1/2010

In our culture we are very dependent on our automobiles. Many of us spend much of our time behind the wheel whether it is commuting to work, actually doing our jobs, shopping, or recreational or leisure travel.

Bishop Watson wants to be sure everyone knows about the new law that prohibits individuals from sending or receiving text messages while operating a motor vehicle.

The new law, Senate Bill 360, states: "No person shall operate a motor vehicle on any public road or highway of this state while using a wireless telecommunications device to write, send, or read any text based communication, including but not limited to a text message, instant message, electronic mail, or Internet data."

The fine for offenders will be $150 and one point on their driver license, the new law goes into effect on this Thursday, July 1, 2010.

Please obey this new law. It will save you paying a fine. More importantly, it could save your life and the lives of others. Be aware of other things that drivers do that distract them that are not illegal. While driving avoid changing the song on your iPod or CD in your car stereo, putting on make-up, eating, reading other practices that endanger lives--yours and others.
